We've been pretty lax about updating this page with new music, though the Penny Dreadful Valentine page has been slowly growing over the last few months. When we last updated this site it was about the third and fourth new PDV tracks. Since then, we've posted three new tunes and a remix.

You can find the songs The God in the Bowl, Red Velvet Upholstery, Black Leather Curtains and Black Light God available as free downloads over at the official Penny Dreadful Valentine site. There's also a remix of Red Velvet Upholstery, Black Leather Curtains posted, as well. They're all free downloads.

Once over there, feel free to nose around. The album's liner notes and most of the lyrics are posted, in addition to the songs.

Two new songs! Kinda!

We've got two new songs available for download, though one isn't exactly "new" (nor is it exactly "ours.")

The first is song number five from Penny Dreadful Valentine. Titled Black Light God, it's available for download over at the album's website. Get it here.

Black Light God was intended for our last LP but we had two problems with the song. First, the original mix was a bit agonizing to listen to, even by our obnoxious standards. Second, the original lyrics sucked harder than an Olympic-class sucking thing (and I can say that because I wrote them.) Mark stepped in an re-wrote the lyrics, keeping only my original Black Light God idea and jettisoning the other shite.

In case you were wondering, the Black Light God from my lyrics was Captain Marvel. The Kree guy, not Shazam. Even though it didn't make the final cut for our first album, it was still referenced in the lyrics of Sword of Galaga. ("Oh," you must be thinking. "NOW the song makes sense!")

The other "new" song is our re-mix of IG-88's '57 Chevy by mc chris. He had a contest to remix songs from his Part Six eps and, being huge fans, we thought we'd take a stab at one of the songs. As usual, though, we dragged our asses and missed the deadline. We're trying to get our new album done and the remix thing just got pushed to the side for a few days too many.

We wanted to do one of the Star Wars songs and decided ti pick the one about IG-88. He's like the bounty hunter who always gets picked last in gym class, so we thought we'd show him a little love.

The original concept of our re-mix was to do a classic Run DMC/License to Ill-era Beastie Boys version of the song. As with everything we do, though, it threatened to turn into a Destroy All Monsters tune before the first chorus was over.

We're on fire this week ... not only can you expect a new track from Penny Dreadful Valentine to hit the Internet during the next few days, but we've got a collaboration pending with some fantastic S.C. musicians you might recognize, too. The tracks for PDV are coming together and, thanks to a happy accident, we might have turned one song into two (a mistake which might also have uncovered the thread of the album's narrative.) We're perilously close to releasing some new music. Currently being mixed are the songs Belladonna and The King in Yellow, both of which will be posted as free downloads ASAP.

The current plan is to release the new album (titled Penny Dreadful Valentine) track-by-track as the songs are completed. The songs will likely premiere on outside blogs and podcasts before making their way to the dedicated PDV website for free. Stay tuned for announcements!

Hey, all.

We've been away for a while but are in the process of shaking off the rust and (finally) making good on our threat of releasing some new music. We've got an album's worth of material that still needs work but, honestly, we might can the whole thing and move off in another direction. Or we might release two albums. We'll just have to wait and see.

The plan is to release SOMETHING by Halloween. All we have to do now is determine if it will be a trickle or a flood. Whatever happens, it's going to be crazy. Keep an eye on this page over the next few days for some more news.

A free album from M-Tank!

Last week, we did a show with five other bands at New Brookland Tavern in Columbia, S.C. Load-in was at 5 p.m., but we weren't scheduled to take the stage until 10:30 p.m., which left us with a lot of time to kill before our set. Fortunately, there were a lot of great acts on the bill, among them a band called M-Tank.
Since that night I've been trying to think of a way to describe the band. My first thoughts were of The Minutemen and The Pixies, but those bands sound nothing like each other (and share only superficial similarities to M-Tank.) Besides, I've never found comparing the sound of one band to another to be a worthwhile endeavor.

M-Tank handed out free copies of their demo CD to some of us in the audience, and I've listened to it quite a bit during the last week. After the first listen I settled on an apt description of the band:
If punk rock happened in the 1960s, it would sound exactly like M-Tank.

They've given us permission to post the demo disc on our site, which you can get by CLICKING HERE (it's a Rapidshare link.)

My late Halloween story

I lived on a naval weapon station in New Jersey as a kid, which had its perks. There was a dense forest to play in, one riddled with sandy cliffs, streams and swamp lands that were fun to play in during the winter.
The base saw a lot of weapons pass through its gates, some of them nuclear. At the time I was too dumb to be afraid when "broken arrow" alerts were declared, which meant there was some kind of problem involving a nuclear weapon. During broken arrows nobody was allowed on or off the base — which included school buses. I was content to miss a few hours of school and was oblivious to threats of impending doom.
One Halloween I had an idea for a cool costume. I had a demon mask that had some great detail in the face, fit well on my head and was surprisingly easy to breathe in. My idea was to add a few accessories to the mask to make a full-fledged demon costume, most importantly a pair of cardboard bat-shaped wings.
Here's where things got problematic.
My mom had the idea to glue paper "scales" to the wings to make them more textured. I thought it was a great idea, but came home from school one day to find we weren't on the same page. She had used gift wrapping paper, and had glued the "scales" with the floral design face-out. I had envisioned something that would have looked at home on the front of an Iron Maiden cover, and got something that was kinda girly.
So, I slipped out of the house with a back-up costume in tow because I didn't want to hurt her feelings. And what was my back-up costume?
A terrorist.
I went trick or treating that year with a group of other kids my age, wearing a camouflage coat and ski mask, and carried a very realistic toy shotgun. On a naval weapons station.
Had I pulled that today, I'd probably be writing this blog post from Guantanamo Bay.

Remind me some other time to tell the story about how I recycled that costume idea — complete with a fake time bomb around my neck — for career day when I was in high school.

We're whittling away at the list of tracks for the free Learn Karate album. We're down to 19 tracks, but it looks like we've got one or two additions to add to that list. And then we have to decide if we're going to release the damn thing at all.

Meanwhile, I've uploaded two previously unreleased songs to Reverb Nation. Both are candidates for Learn Karate. You should be able to hear them in the Reverb Nation widget posted here and at other sites around the web.

The two tracks are:

1: The Siege and Investiture of Baron Von Frankenstein's Castle at Weisseria. This is a deleted track from Bride of Shock Theatre, bumped in favor of another Blue Oyster Cult tune, Godzilla. While it was released as a BOC song (on the Imaginos album) I'm not sure anyone from the band actually played on the original recording. There was a guest vocalist, as well as a guest lead guitarist (Joe Satriani, no less.) Wiki "Imaginos" for the full story on that album. It's fascinating.

2: Jack the Ripper. This is a live recording from our show at New Brookland Tavern on Oct. 21. It was recorded in the audience, so its sound quality is on par with the average Misfits bootleg (in other words it sounds like crap,) but it gives us a chance to show off our new drummer Whitney. I did the vocals on the studio version; Mark sings it live and kicks my ass.

So, I had an idea last weekend.
We've got a lot of unreleased songs currently taking up space on our hard drives. Some are total shit, but there are a handful that I don't hate. All told, I've got between 15 and 20 tracks made up of acoustic demos, an outtake from Bride of Shock Theatre*, some early original songs from our aborted first LP, interviews and some crummy sounding (yet energetic) live recordings. I've titled the compilation "Learn Karate" because ... well, you'll just have to wait and see.

That being said ... should we release it? My concern is that these songs weren't good enough to include on earlier albums, so why now? But maybe I'm just over thinking it.

What are your thoughts?

Driving home from the New Brookland Tavern show Wednesday night I saw something interesting. It was around 1 in the morning in small southern town about 2o miles from Camden, S.C. A man and a woman were bundled up in winter clothes and were pushing an infant in a stroller.

Anyway, we've got a few artifacts from last Wednesday's show that will be posted here in coming weeks. We're waiting to get photos from the show, and the audio recording of our performance is obnoxiously raw and needs some work before releasing it into the wild (assuming it can be released at all.)

In the meantime, here are some photos from the show. These are all of various quality, some taken with a camera, others with a cell phone. I just wish I had a photo of the looks on the faces of the guys standing outside the men's room when I stepped out wearing my luchadore mask.

News from the front: New Brookland Tavern

I'm running on about three hours sleep, so this may get a bit disjointed. Bear with me.

New Brookland Tavern has been one of my favorite places to hang out since moving to Columbia. Despite seeming a bit run down around the edges, it has a quality sound system, a consistently cool staff and a history of booking unexpected acts. My first time there, I literally stumbled into an Andrew W.K. show. Since then I've seen everyone from Rasputina to MC Chris hit the stage, along with some really great local and regional acts.

Speaking of which, I was supposed to talking about our show, wasn't I?

I think we had a good show. The turn out was lower than anticipated, there were some time restrictions that we weren't anticipating and of course, there were technical issues (I blame Simon. Mere mortal amps can't handle his guitar deviltry), but all in all it was a good time.

It looks we may have gotten some good audio this time around, so expect to hear something in the near future. Also, we're going through the video from Zombie Prom and hope to have something to post soon.

Thanks to everyone who showed up, especially Danny for taking pics for us, and Sarah, Michelle and Heramb for the free drinks. And Christie? I'll wear the kilt next time. Promise.

As a young tyke in Norfolk, Va., I was a big fan of Doctor Madblood. He was the local "horror movie host" and was one of my heroes. I've got vague memories of meeting him at a Halloween event at a local mall, but don't know if those memories are accurate (much like my memories of meeting Adam West, who might have just been some guy in a Batman costume.)

Anyhow, I haven't lived in Virginia for a long time, but a visit to Camp Movie Camp got me to thinking about Dr. M, so I hit up his website. You can find him at www.madblood.net.

I've re-loaded our various download links today. A few of them fizzled out, which has happened a few times over the last two years. But that's what we get for not paying to have a dedicated online server.
We are also approaching the 3,000 download of our Hideous Sexy EP. The real landmark here is that this link has continued uninterrupted over the last year. Between the various mirrors (which we are unable to track) and the various blogs who have uploaded our albums to their own servers, the 3,000 download milestone is something we probably passed a long, long time ago.

Goddamn, I'm tired. Our show at Zombie Prom was a train wreck in the grand punk tradition. Tired, angry and drunk, we took to the stage two hours after we were scheduled to go on. Most of us had been awake since 5 a.m. and had been drinking heavily (booze and energy drinks) since our arrival. A college football game pushed back our 11 p.m. show for an hour, and then we traded places with DJ Cy-Fi (for good reasons.) Still, by the time we went on at 1 a.m. we were exhausted and irritable, and our happy buzz had turned to dizzy fatigue. We tripped over our own songs constantly and, adding insult to injury, the PA dropped some of our mics. I don't know what went first, but by the end of the show the mic over my guitars was dead, as was my vocal mic and our SFX. We all had to play and hope the others were on mark, which wasn't always the case. And god only knows how my guitars sounded because I couldn't hear a fucking thing.
There was a happy ending, though. During our last song, Valentine Wolfe, DJ Cy-Fi and Thee Inner Circus joined us on stage ... which was pretty fucking cool of them. The last five minutes made the whole trip worthwhile. Follow the hotlinks in this post to find out more about these great artists.

Most of the performers joined us on stage during the last song. You can see most of them below. Our drummer, Whit, is hidden behind her kit ... which is why she doesn't appear in many of the photos. Trust us, though. She was there.

Valentine Wolfe opens the ZP with a strong set of fairy-tale themed tunes.

In the men's room Mark found a business card from a white supremacy group looking for new recruits. We disposed of it for them.

Big Brother or technical glitch?

A few posts back I mentioned an unsettling experience over the weekend with Direct TV. To recap: my timed recording of Saturday Night Live mysteriously ended about 45 minutes into the program, only to re-start 30 minutes before the end. Missing was the much-discussed "f-bomb" by new cast member Jenny Slate.

So I decided to ask someone who's voiced a few TiVo-related grievances on his blog over the years: Mark Evanier. Mark's made his living as a professional writer over the last few decades, contributing to television, comics and books. Once upon a time he was Jack Kirby's assistant. You can see his name in some of the early issues of Kirby's "The Demon" (a personal favorite.)

After I sent him the message, I realized how strange and stupid it was. It would have made more sense to call Direct TV, but it was too late to retract the e-mail. Last night, he responded:

"I think what happened was that for some reason, your TiVo rebooted in the middle of the broadcast. Maybe you had a power hit or a momentary power failure. But two recordings like that are what results from your TiVo rebooting while it's recording a program."

So, chalk up a few brownie points for Mr. Evanier. A take a few away from me for being a dumbass.

I was too young to witness Charles Rocket attempt career suicide on SNL* but had a chance last weekend to see new cast member Jenny Slate follow in his footsteps. Sorta. I've got Direct TV and awoke to find the recorded episode had mysteriously been separated into two halves. The sketch below was missing ... which is creepy as hell. Does Direct TV have the power to edit programming after the fact, or was it just a coincidence? If it was a coincidence, it's not big deal, I guess.
If they are retroactively editing programming on our digital recorders, let me say this:
FUCK.
See. The world didn't end.

Junkstore Raider

I hit a local junkstore a few minutes ago and found a couple of treasures: a Dorothy Shay boxed set, one disc from a vintage collection of Cab Calloway recordings (one of my favorite artists) and this little gem from the 1980s:

I'm pretty sure this Emo Phillips album has been out of print for a long, long time. Which is a shame, because Emo is fucking funny.

I got this entire lot for $2.50.

South Carolina's State Birds

Last week I was at a high school football game (don't ask) and saw swarms of god-knows-what circling the lights. FYI for those of you in cooler climates: it isn't unusual to see this kind of thing in the South. But that doesn't mean it's not creepy.

I'm a big fan of mixtapes. In a lot of ways, my fascination with these kinds of projects lead to the creation of Mary Shelley Overdrive.

Mary Shelley Overdrive @ Zombie Prom

On Oct. 2, Mary Shelley Overdrive will be appearing at Ground Zero in Spartanburg, S.C. The band is one of two acts (the other being our friends Valentine Wolfe) appearing at the Zombie Prom gig. We take the stage at 11 p.m.

Honestly, I have absolutely no idea what to expect. But an event called a Zombie Prom seems tailored for MSO. We're working up a set right now and plan to blow the doors off the place.

We've got one small problem, though. All of the photographers we know are either a) in the band, or b) have a scheduling conflict. If anyone out there wants to volunteer to shoot the event, please drop us a line at maryshelleyoverdrive@yahoo.com.
